You're reading from a seasoned Costa Rica traveler. Welcome! When packing your suitcase and carry on luggage for Costa Rica there are some ins and outs. A lot of what you should bring on your Costa Rica trip can be purchased here in Costa Rica and some things must or should be brought to Costa Rica.

Here are our recommendations for what to bring with you to Costa Rica or purchase upon arrival.

Lightweight pants, hoodies and long sleeve clothing (Having this is great at night for bug protection, during the day for sun protection and lightweight windbreaker style hoodies are great if it rains a bit.)

Swimwear and sandals (This is obvious, but imperative for the pool and beach.)

Umbrella (It doesn't rain as much as you think in Costa Rica, but it's a handy item.)

Bluetooth Speaker (Even if you're not visiting Costa Rica to party, it's still great to have tunes on your balcony with a view.)

Download Whatsapp from the App Store or Google Play before your trip (Most calls and texts in Costa Rica are done on Whatsapp.)

Wifi Calling (Check if your cell phone provider offers free Wifi calls and enable the feature.  It will save you a ton on international roaming if you can keep your phone in airplane mode.)

Insect repellent and thermacells (While not necessary everywhere, when it is necessary it's great to have it available.)

Sunscreen and Aloe (The equatorial sun is a fiercer force than you might think.)

Wired Headphones and Wireless Headphones (Bring both because not every airplane offers the same connections for inflight entertainment.)

Battery Pack for Cell Phone Charging (It's all worth it when you need it at the airport or just a whoops day.)

Blender or Nutri-Bullet (Yep.  I know.  It will fit though if you pack well and it's a game changer.  You're talking about on demand smoothies of the freshest organic fruit and you can throw very affordable local rum in there at your wish.  It's a huge savings and great to have around if you're in a town where everything shuts down early.)

Snacks (Just in case it gets late and the store isn't open at midnight or maybe earlier, depending on the destination you choose.  Have plenty of these on hand.  Ticos (Costa Ricans) wake up early to enjoy their day so they tend to shut down earlier than what is normal for the rest of the world.  If you're in a party town or a tourist town, something will probably be available, but these are a great thing to have on hand)

Home Country Brands (This is mainly a matter of taste and most international products are available here, but if you're a smoker then bring your brand, if there is a certain chocolate or vegemite or whatever that you must have, just bring it.  Especially if you're bringing kids that like what they like)

Oh Yeah, and A Big Smile (It's super fun here.  People are very patient, helpful, welcoming and just incredible to all of us.  So make sure to bring your best cool.  Pura Vida is real)
